O.K., lets get this thing going. I am going to start off my reviews with a new freeware app. that I recently started using named Carbon Copy Cloner. To be rather frank I can’t believe this app. is free. I use it in conjunction with my newly purchased iomega 1TB HD as a backup scheduling app and startup disk cloner. To be even franker iomega came with free back up software in a multi choice package free for purchasers online named the “iomega protection suite”.
Back to the getting “even franker” part, this protection suite is not sweet at all! In fact it’s pretty sour. All the software either couldn’t install like the Quick protect app. or was outdated like the EMC Retrospect Express app. definitely “retro” options and ugly Windows looking interface. You also get 2GB online storage if you sign up with Mozy Online/ Iomega® Protection Suite. I won’t mention the free Mcafee virus protection for Windows users and didn’t expect to get any free for Mac customers.
Well back to Carbon Copy Cloner app.. If you have an external HD for backup or storage (you better!) this is the app to use. It is user friendly almost Mac like intuitive and works! You can do scheduled backups of certain files like your home folder hourly/daily/monthly. You get the picture. Or do a full clone of your hard drive to be used as a start up disk.
I’m pretty sure the external hard drive has to be a fire wire 400 or 800 to be used as a backup boot disk with a Mac.
Encryption is also possible. There is everything SuperDuper has except “sandboxing”. But SuperDuper is shareware and all it’s best features are in the licensed version. Carbon Copy Cloner is efficient dependable and easy to use best of all FREE!
So now I reach the subject of the ‘iomega Prestige 1 Terabyte external hard drive’. This HD has a beautiful and deeply brushed aluminum casing. The color is darker than the Macpro or Macbook pro aluminum shade.
The performance is quiet except for a silent click of the drive spinning when it engages in a backup or data retrieval request. This drive also sports a very white single LED light that pulses with the flow of data moving (I suppose). This is really helpful, to know when it is active and not to be fanagled with or shut off/ejected. The main data ports and connections are high speed 2.0 type with a tranfer rate of 480 Mbits/s.
It comes with a NTFS format and must be reformatted for use with a Mac.
This is easily and quickly accomplished using disk utility. This would be changed to extended journaled format.
Other then that it’s a big brain in a small package. I believe it spins at about 7200 rpm or at least thats what they claim on various sites for this product. The subject then arrises as to wether this drive can be used for a start up disk if your main start up disk fails? As far as I have researched you can’t use a hi speed USB 2.0 for a start up disk it must be a firewire 400 or 800. Yet I have not tested this personally so let me know.
luta15@mac.com .
